At St Erme with Trispen, we believe that regular, high-quality training and support are essential to ensuring all staff become confident and knowledgeable Reading Experts.
We provide ongoing professional development through:
-
RWI training: All phonics teachers complete the two-day Read Write Inc. training course, with all teachers and teaching assistants having access to additional bitesize training through the Ruth Miskin Portal.
-
Regular staff training: Half-termly staff meetings focus on Read Write Inc., early reading and VIPERS reading skills. Teaching assistants also attend a whole-staff meeting at the start of each half-term.
-
Ongoing coaching and support: The Early Reading Lead provides weekly coaching for reading teachers, shares new strategies and offers guidance and follow-up support.
-
Targeted professional development: Teachers and teaching assistants receive additional in-house or external training to meet school priorities, individual development targets and identified needs.
-
Monitoring and feedback: The Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, Early Reading Lead and English Lead monitor phonics and whole-class reading through lesson visits, learning walks, pupil conferencing and book looks. Feedback and guidance help ensure consistency and high-quality teaching across the school.
-
Support for pupils: The SENDCo undertakes learning walks to observe and support pupils who find reading challenging, providing feedback to the adults working with them.
-
Sharing good practice: New and recently qualified teachers have opportunities to observe experienced colleagues, while the English Lead supports lesson planning and attends annual subject leadership training and termly updates with Dandelion Learning Literacy Consultancy.
Through this ongoing training, monitoring and collaboration, we aim to ensure that every member of staff has the knowledge, skills and confidence to support children in becoming successful, enthusiastic readers.
